Cut out book...

I've made this cutout book this year for my book structures class. I am pleased with the idea, but not the craftsmanship! I hope I can re-create in the future... I've used portraits I've previously painted and scanned them in to create the pages and cutouts..

  4. i'm not sure what you mean by no craftsmanship...I love the variegated lines and the fluidity and intricacy created. The overlay of line and shape created by the shadows adds another interesting dimension...

  5. Awesome pages! This is something I would like to try my own hand at. Want to write a how-to on it? *grins*

  6. VERY cool! The portraits are awesome, and the cutouts create such neat shadows. This would be a wonderful book to see in person!

  8. These are doodles that i create from time to time - you know those drawings you do when your not thinking...talking on the phone, listening to a boring lecture.. I think they developed from my constant interest in patterns on fabric - and since I wear a lot of local made dresses made of patterned fabric, it is part of my daily life.

Basically what I did was integrate these patterns into the portraits, and into the hair. I scanned them in and zoomed on certain parts and focus on one are. I then printed them out on card paper and slowly, using a paper knife, cut out the bits i didn't want.

The most amazing part of it were the shadows...

  10. The project was to create a book with 'cutouts'. As I had these drawings - I decided to cut the patterns and overlay them to create depth and shadow.
